Russia says EU weakens itself by isolating Moscow
The EU sharply curtailed engagement with Russia after the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022, aiming to “isolate” the country. However, the bloc remains divided internally: Baltic states have consistently resisted re-engagement, while nations like Hungary and Slovakia have pushed for renewed cooperation.
“Europe has put itself on a downward slide through its own ill-considered decisions,” Polyansky told Rossiya 24. He argued that cutting ties with resource-rich Russia and even limiting cultural and sports exchanges has deprived the EU of “a major source of strength.”
Polyansky outlined two possible paths for Europe’s future approach. In the first, the EU will continue to remain isolated, “freezing its ears off to spite [its] grandmother.” In the second, the bloc will recognize that progress is impossible without Russia and will eventually be forced to cooperate and maintain friendly relations.
He noted that Brussels’ isolationist stance has largely sidelined the EU from Ukraine peace talks since last February, when US President Donald Trump began mediating between Moscow and Kyiv.
In recent months, some European leaders have shifted their rhetoric toward Russia. In December, French President Emmanuel Macron described renewed engagement with President Vladimir Putin as “useful.”
